The Carbohydrate Insulin Model of weight gain is more comprehensive than the Calorie model because it includes both the energy (calories) as well as the hormonal effect of foods, particularly insulin. Dr Jason Fung explains why this is important to understand and why calorie counting so often leads to failed weight loss attempts.

Losing weight has never been an issue for me. Getting my blood sugar down is.
I really want to thank you for all that you do and teach. I have lost a total of 90 lbs by listening to your advice. I feel so much better my insulin numbers are perfect, diabetes type 2 is completely gone. My general physician is amazed and impressed.
Thank you for all your knowledge and sharing it publicly.
Dr Fung has saved thousands of lives
When I fast, cortisol kicks in and I don’t lose any weight. It doesn’t matter how long my IF window is, or if I’m eating 0 carbs, low calorie, etc. Elevated cortisol raises blood sugar which increases insulin levels. So as long as insulin levels are high, I’m not going to be able to burn stored fat. No one ever talks about this aspect. How do you prevent the body from getting stressed when fasting and stopping the cortisol release?
Excellent explanation, Dr. Fung. The hormonal model, as you stated, is much more comprehensive than the simple CICO model. Thanks for all that you do.
Sugar and carbs do cause weight gain, i remember when i was over eating junk like candy etc… but also calorie in and calorie out is very important. A few years back i was doing the ketogenic diet 80% fat 15%protein and 5% carbs and i gained weight because i was eating too much. Its very easy to overeat when most of your calories come from fat.
Right now i lost more than 50 pounds i am 49 combining fasting short fast and longer fast, cutting out junk but also keeping my calories in check.
Yep, since changing to Keto with IF, just melts off me. Of course you still need to eat within a deficit, but I find Keto with IF for me works best and most importantly sustainable
Now I understand why I am not losing weight. Eating too frequent and sometimes little food with the intention to counter balance the effect is a disaster to weight lost failure. Knowledge is power. Thank you Dr Jason.
Lost 80lbs listening to this man. He’s making a difference in lots of people’s lives
This man is a legend. I started doing OMAD beginning of July this year. I cut out sugars and reduced my carbs to between 10-20g a day and in just under 5 months, I’ve lost 100lbs. Just writing this doesn’t seem real but it is and I am forever grateful for this knowledge and the power of fasting.
This chemist retired in 2017 50 lbs overweight. Then had time to walk, swim, cycle a lot. After two years only down five pounds. That defied traditional calorie accounting logic. When COVID hit in 2020, looked for suggestions to optimize my immune system and discovered Dr. Fung’s videos. Intermittent fasting did just that and more. In just three months- Lost 45 lbs.! Normal BMI! Normal BP! NO medications! Weight says off plus much healthier with incorporation on extended fasts once every three months. God bless you Dr. Fung!
He is such an amazing doctor!!! I have implemented all his advice and lost 41 pounds in 6 months. My body shape has changed beautifully, and my energy level is so high. At 56 years old I thought I would never lose weight. So happy now!!!
I am so cross. For 30 years I have been losing and gaining about 15 kgs over and over again. I’ve probably lost and gained my entire body weight twice over. For the past 7 years I have been low carb and now I do IF and my weight has stabilised, I eat well, without counting calories and I never feel hungry (or hangry! ) I do occasionally eat carbs (Christmas is coming!) but now regard low carb/IF as my normal eating pattern and find it easy to slip back into after holidays and celebrations.
Doctors and nutritionists etc have been telling us calories in calories out and demonising Dr Atkins and all the time this information has been there.
Thanks Dr Fung for posting these videos to which I direct other people who want information, and also for inspiration and motivation for myself.
